About the Faculty

Historical brief on the origin of UQU

UQU is considered a shrine for higher education in from the day it was founded and through its life. At the beginning of the year 1369 hijri, faculty of Alsharai was founded and continued to deliver its message where the graduates assumed positions educating religious matters and Arabic language, and in 1372 hijri some of them assumed positions in courts.

In 1379 hijri, the faculty of education was founded graduating qualified teachers, then in 1380/1381 hijri, both faculties merged in faculty of Alsharai and education. In 1382 hijri, faculty of education separated from main university and opened an affiliation program for women pioneering women education in college.

In 1389, department of postgraduate studies opened for faculty of Alsharai to fulfil demands and ambition of citizens. During the month of safar, 1391 hijri, the two faculties merged with King Abdulaziz’s university and began an in house education for women. Before that, the university used term method, and then shifted to accredited hours in 1393/1394 hijri for faculty of education. And it was used for faculty of alsharai 1394/1395 hijri, but not for postgraduate studies.

In sha’ban 1400 hijri, a dream came true for the people of the city of Holy Mecca, a royal decree was issued to found university of UQU from his highness the late, King Khaled ben Abdulaziz who honoured the university with his honorary presidency and continued to offer his continuous support to the university financially and morally. The journey of construction and development continued during the reign of his majesty the late King Fahd ben Abdulaziz, and then his majesty King Abdullah ben Abdulaziz continued and sponsored all higher education beacons and the country began to found new universities and expanded in higher education fields and began a scientific spurt in all fields of education.

Vision and message

Vision: the university is to be a gate for science and knowledge in dentistry in the region, pioneering scientific research and be the centre of education of modern science based on educational outputs existing in the encouraging academic environment for both students and faculty to innovate and excel and to have a role in sponsoring the community in Mecca and serve pilgrims.

Message: provide high medical education for students and practitioners in the field of dentistry and support scientific research in basic and clinical science and serve the community according to UQU’s message.


A.   Graduate studies:

1.     Provide a highly scientific environment enough to qualify dentist with high qualifications committed to the Islamic morals and medical proficiency and work with team spirit preserving the uniqueness of each member.

2.     Qualify and train a generation of aware doctors fitting all international standards of dentistry by providing an academic program that provides a bachelor degree in dentistry.

3.     Qualify graduates to qualify for licence for practitioners and acceptance in local or international postgraduate programs.

4.     Qualify graduates to be responsible for elevating quality of medical service in the region and continuous effort on self-development and continuous education.

5.     Connect between abilities and skills of graduate with medical needs in the society in Mecca and KSA and market demand.

6.     Provide a prosperous medical education based on educational outputs using a modern educational scientific method based on support of self-evaluation of curriculum, methods of teaching and evaluation emphasizing on feedback.

7.     Cooperation with distinct international organizations and universities to develop college programs, methods of education, evaluation, scientific research, and community service.

B.   Post graduate phase “higher education and medical continuous learning”.

1.     Provide a higher education program that fulfils both current and future needs in the field of dentistry.

2.     Develop faculty and postgraduate student’s skills using a medical continuous learning program, self-education, and participation in scientific researches in established medical and scientific local and international events.


1.     Provide medical service; care, prevention and treatment of the community through general and specialized faculty clinics.

2.     Provide consultancy and medical services as a basic reference in the region for dentistry.

3.     Prepare and send medical missions to serve pilgrims and rural areas.

4.     Provide medical service for people with special needs.

4.     Respect medical services’ system and work within an integrated framework.
